Checking and adding oil is one of the easiest things you can do to help keep your vehicle running great. Use oil that is the correct weight and is certified by the American Petroleum Institute. Here's how to get an accurate reading and how to add oil. Just remember that this is not a substitute for regular oil changes.
Park on level ground. Turn engine off and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain into the oil pan.
Put vehicle in park, set parking brake.
Open the hood and locate the engine oil dipstick (usually has small hook-like handle).
Remove dipstick, wipe it clean, then fully insert it and remove it again.
If the oil level is between MIN and MAX, it's OK. Do not add oil.
If the level is below MIN, check your owner's guide (your owner's guide is available online in Owner Services) to see what engine oil is right for your vehicle.
To add oil, locate the Oil Filler Cap and, using a funnel, pour the engine oil in.
Check level on dipstick again. Be sure the level does not exceed the MAX line. This could cause engine damage and a costly service repair. Put the dipstick back in and make sure it is fully seated.
