To avoid brake failure, check and refill fluid at least once a year. Of course, if brakes aren't performing correctly, make sure to check the fluid also. Five simple steps follow.
Open hood and locate brake fluid cap.
Wipe off cap with rag (to prevent debris from falling into fluid) and remove.
Visually inspect fluid level.
If necessary, add brake fluid until level reaches MAX line. Do not overfill. Be careful-brake fluid is not only toxic, it also will damage your car's finish if spilled.
It's simple to do, so be sure to check steering fluid at least once a year.
Start the engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature (the temperature gauge will be near the center of the NORMAL band).
While the engine idles, turn the steering wheel left and right several times.
Turn off the engine.
Locate the Power Steering Reservoir.
Check the fluid level in the reservoir. It should be between the MIN and MAX lines. If it is, do not add fluid.
If the fluid is low, add fluid in small amounts, until it reaches the proper range. Replace the cap. Consult your owner's guide to determine proper power steering fluid.
